We're moving our official community work towards the Packbase Community Hub, Forums and Root community.

After an internal vote, we're deprioritising Discord. The server itself and the way we moderate it aren't changing right now, but we're making a few practical changes:

  • The Discord invite is leaving the main Wild HQ site. The server will still exist and remain joinable from a secondary Packbase page.
  • Most Discord links will point to the Community Hub instead, where you can also find the Forums and Root.
  • We'll post announcements to both Root and Discord, with a Root-to-Discord bridge planned for later.
  • Feedback now belongs in the Community Hub or Forums. Root can join in once it has the right custom channel types.

Discord may become unofficial later, but we haven't made that call.

We're not opening a Matrix instance, a Stoat community or our own "Discord killer" either. Each comes with security, hosting or regulatory problems we don't want to drag home with us. We are working on a secure, self-hostable and federated Pack DMs SDK for Packbase.

personal bit from rek

Everything below is my view, not a Wild HQ team position.

Discord means a lot to me. I've been there since the early days, when it felt like the company genuinely cared about its community. Between global age checks, the continued use of Persona, the IPO filing, its handling of unsafe communities and the direction of its leadership, I don't trust it anymore.

I'm just some random person on the internet, but I really think it's worth reconsidering how much support we give a company that'll soon have shareholders to keep happy. Your alternative doesn't have to be Root. Matrix has its own serious problems—June explains those well—and Stoat is still young. I'd still rather people look around than treat Discord like it has to be here forever.

Since the original post, PC Gamer has also reported on Persona's links to Peter Thiel.

And no, you don't need custom emotes badly enough to ignore all of that.

I'll see you on Packbase.
